A Newspaper Ad Wroth Fixing Your Hair For

A newspaper ad worth fixing your hair for

Ranbir Kapoor could be in the photograph and you’d still check how you look first.

Lay’s latest print campaign gives you a chance to test that. Beside Ranbir, pictured at a table with a bowl of Lay’s, is a panel marked “Peel to reveal.” Pull back the covering and a mirror puts your reflection next to him.

You might have opened the newspaper in your oldest T-shirt. Suddenly, that feels like a wardrobe decision.

The pleasure of the idea is how quickly you understand it. You see the mirror, find your face and start adjusting the angle. Knowing that Ranbir is printed on the page doesn’t stop you from wanting a photograph.

Lay’s has chosen the setting well. Sharing chips is familiar. You can picture reaching for the bowl and talking between handfuls. The mirror lets you try out the considerably less familiar company.

The newspaper does something your screen can’t do in quite the same way.

You have to lift the covering yourself. The reflection changes as you move the page. Someone holding the paper can become part of getting the shot right.

Those details give the print execution a reason to exist in this form. A reader’s face completes the scene, so the same newspaper can produce a different picture for each person who picks it up. Lay’s supplies enough of the idea to make it clear, then leaves people to enjoy it.

The promotion behind it, “Lay’s Kholo, Ranbir Se Milo,” offers a chance to win a meet-and-greet with Ranbir Kapoor. The print ad introduces that possibility through something readers can try for themselves.
