CANCER: More Than A Disease

Cancer is a malignant growth or tumour resulting from an uncontrolled division of cells. What is never being discussed, is that it’s not just a      disease, but a FEAR too. That’s because people being CURED are much less than the people who don’t survive it. We all know it’s a hard journey after one gets diagnosed with cancer. Cancer is horrifying. It is killing people in a number we wouldn’t even want to think of. The number of cases is increasing rapidly.

 We all know we can do very little in trying not to have CANCER. What I’m saying is “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE”.

WE’D BE FOCUSSING ON CARCINOGENIC FOOD THAT WE NEED TO AVOID IN THIS ONE.

WHY ‘FOOD’?

The food WE consume (to keep yourself healthy or fit) has the maximum power to alter and decide how efficient our body and immune system are. That’s why, physical, psychological, social and emotional health will be proper only when we follow the right diet and vice versa.

Exercising or Physical work is also of great significance and it’s good if you are doing it already but its significance appears to come near ZERO if the diet we consume isn’t healthy.

Fact check: Whenever we eat something that is fibrous, light and healthy our stomach feels relaxed and our stamina/physical activity gets better, we feel energetic. On the other hand, whenever we eat something that is oily, heavy and unhealthy our output is next to nothing.

Food is the fuel. Staying happy and healthy: Those Are The Most Important Things In Life. 

 TOP 10 “CARCINOGENIC” FOODS: WE NEED TO AVOID, TO STAY ALIVE AND HEALTHY.

PROCESSED MEAT

Any meat that has been modified so that its taste can be improved and shelf life can be extended, easily is called PROCESSED MEAT. Methods of meat processing include salting, curing, fermentation and finally smoking. Processed meat is generally composed of pork or beef, poultry (sometimes) and also, by-products like blood are also present (sometimes),

Food items that include PROCESSED MEAT include bacon, ham, canned meat, salami, corned beef, sausages, jerky.

Meat processing started gaining attention only when people realized that salting and curing prolong the life of fresh meat. 

The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) was able to find sufficient evidence which simply stated and pointed out that the consumption of PROCESSED MEAT by a human can cause colorectal cancer in them.

And the same thing the IARC describes at the WHO (World Health Organization) by classifying PROCESSED MEAT in and as GROUP 1 (Carcinogenic for humans).

 EXCESSIVELY SALTED AND PICKLED FOOD(s)

Preservation of food using dry edible salt is called SALTING. It is one of the oldest methods of preserving food and is also one form of CURING.

In history, the two most significant salt-cured foods are SALTED FISH and SALT-CURED MEAT.

{Generally, SALTING is related to PICKLING and specifically, SALTING is related to BRINING (preparation of food using brine i.e. salty water)}.

Preservation of food by either anaerobic fermentation in brine or immersion in vinegar so as to expand the lifespan of it is called PICKLING.

“STOP SALTING, START SOLVING”

Consumption of highly salted and pickled foods is one of the top causes (maybe, the number 1) of stomach cancer.

 

VERY HOT BEVERAGES

YES! YOU READ IT RIGHT.

According to IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), VERY HOT BEVERAGES are “CARCINOGENS” (a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue) and can cause ESOPHAGEAL CANCER in humans.

Beverages which are hotter than 65 degrees Celsius, which is about 149 degrees Fahrenheit fall under the category of VERY HOT BEVERAGES.

Studies which forced IARC to clearly describe VERY HOT BEVERAGES as a possible carcinogen mostly focused at maté, a tea type which is traditionally drunk at very high temperature and in South America, Asia, and Africa (mainly).

At very high temperature, this tea is likely to cause ESOPHAGEAL CANCER.

RED MEAT

According to Nutritional Sciences, any meat having more of the protein MYOGLOBIN than ‘white meat’ is known as RED MEAT.

RED MEAT is quite rich in iron, creatine, in minerals like zinc and phosphorus and also in vitamins (B and D) especially in B1, B2, B3 and B12.

CANCER CONNECTION

There was and is a direct connection between the consumption of processed red meat by humans and several types of cancer in humans. It can cause specifically lung, oesophagal, liver, colon and a few types of rare cancer.

IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) defined RED MEAT as the one of the root cause of cancer in humans on the basis of limited as well as strong mechanistic evidence and put it under Group 2A (probably carcinogenic to humans).

 PASTA 

It’s a type of noodle made from an unleavened dough of pasta wheat flour mixed with water or eggs and then, formed into various shapes and finally, cooked by boiling or baking.

PASTA IS A STAPLE OF ITALIAN CUISINE.

COMPOSING CANCER

As the heading suggests, the composition of nutrients is the cause of cancer in case of PASTA.

As PASTA is rich in carbohydrates (highly) and several studies have already established a direct link between LUNG CANCER and CARBOHYDRATES. The higher the intake of carbs is, the higher the risk of getting lung cancer.

That’s why and that’s the only way.

Pasta increases the probability of getting LUNG CANCER.

Some studies have also found out that PASTA even causes breast and colorectal cancer. (The reason came out to be same here, CARBS!)

CANNING

Preservation of food by processing and sealing it in an airtight container is called CANNING. The shelf life that canning provides generally ranges from one to five years and sometimes, under a specific condition, It can get much longer.

The movement of substances of and from the can to the content itself is called MIGRATION.

Potentially enough toxic substances that can migrate are LEAD (which can ‘lead’ to ‘lead’ poisoning) or bisphenol A (BPA) which is an potential endocrine disruptor generally used in inner coating of the cans and is responsible for the birth defects and has been linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other serious health problems.

MICROWAVE POPCORN

A popular snack food at sports events and inside movie theatres that is quite tasty and easily available is none other than POPCORN.

But, I’m here to discuss MICROWAVE POPCORN essentially.

It’s a tertiary processed food consisting of unpopped popcorn inside a sealed paper bag purposefully to be heated in a microwave oven.

In addition to the dried corn, the bags generally contain cooking oil with sufficient saturated fat which solidifies at room temperature, one or more than one seasonings (often salt) and also, natural or artificial flavourings or both.

“Microwave popcorn is loaded with artificial butter, and the fumes from it contain the toxic compound diacetyl that is associated with lung cancers,” says Eitan Yefenof, PhD, chairman of the Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.

According to various researches, PerFluorinated Compounds (PFCs) are used as the coating materials in microwave popcorn bags for oil and moisture resistance.

Generally, the studies are majorly conducted on PFOA and PFOS

 Due to their non-biodegradability, toxicity and persistent personality, PFCs exert adverse effects in humans and also in aquatic life.

When conducted on rats, the study detected that PFOA can cause liver, pancreatic and testes tumours. Alongside it, a study was conducted which revealed the harmful effects of exposure to PFOA on the humans living near the chemical plants which included KIDNEY and TESTICULAR CANCER.

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS (SUGAR SUBSTITUTES)

Food additives that provide a sweet taste like that of sugar and also contain comparatively lesser food energy than sugar-based sweeteners are called SUGAR SUBSTITUTES.

This quality makes them zero-calorie or low-calorie sweeteners.

They can be derived by manufacturing plant extracts and also by performing chemical synthesis

In 2017, there were several reports of a couple of studies conducted which simply illustrated the increased risk of COLORECTAL CANCER through the use of SUGAR SUBSTITUTES.

BOTTLED WATER

Here, the concern is all about the plastic used in that “WATER BOTTLE”.

As it’s a polycarbonate container, BPA (Bisphenol-A) needs to be present in it.

Now, I want you to know that BPA, since a long time, is the source of concern for the people (i hope it’s not you) who are consumers of Bottled Drinks (here, Bottled Water).

BUT WHY?

Yeahhhhh……Good Question !!

So, Several Types of research {do I need to mention here that they were conducted? (forced humour)} explained that BPA can function as a hormone disruptor, which obviously, can cause cancer.

During the lab tests, studies clearly displayed the harms of BPA exposure on the fertility and reproductive organs of animals (REMEMBER, HUMAN, IS ALSO A SOCIAL ANIMAL) and the effect was much greater even at low doses.

This thing, however, also proved that BPA increases the risk of BREAST CANCER and PROSTATE CANCER in humans.

 HYDROGENATED OILS

Hydrogenated oils are the vegetable oils whose chemical structure are refashioned so as to prevent rancidity in foods, increase shelf life and save money for food manufacturers. Hydrogenation (process) involves the addition of hydrogen atoms to the oil’s available double bonds. With the increase in the hydrogenation level, the level of saturated fat also increases. The hydrogenation process transforms what are known as “cis” double bonds to “trans” double bonds. This is from where the term “trans fat” originates. Hydrogenation (process) makes food solid or partially solid at room temperature.

According to various researches conducted in the recent past few years, a direct link was found in between consumption of HYDROGENATED OILS and development of COLORECTAL CANCER, PROSTATE CANCER as well as BREAST CANCER in humans.

The crux of it is simple we can’t really control what might happen to us but taking care of ourselves would definitely bring in something good for our body. Even if we fall sick someday at least we know what we have inside our body has the strength to fight it. So fuel your body with a good diet. And try to fight it by stopping yourself from eating cancer-causing food items.
