1.) Kun faya kun

This beautiful number from the blockbuster movie Rockstar is sung by none other than A.R Rahman himself and the lyrics are by our very own mystical writer of new age Irshad Kamil. It was shot in the Dargah of Nizamuddin Auhliya in Delhi and lyrics justify the environment one can feel at the very place.

This outstanding Sufi Qawwali is from movie Jodha Akbar. Penned by the Great Javed Akhtar Sahab and sung by A.R Rahman ( no wonder the experience is so mystifying). Based on the circular dance originated from the legends of Rumi describes the beauty of Khwaja and Allah in all his might.

3.) Shah Ka Rutba

This semi Sufi-Qawwali from movie Agneepath sung by Sukhwinder Singh in his usual energetic voice, lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya music is given by Joy-Atul giving it a Bollywood touch the music doesn’t confine itself to the classics or Bollywood rocks.

4.) Javeda Zindagi -tose Naina large sanware

Javeda Zindagi – Tose Naina Lagey lyrics from ‘Anwar’, starring Siddharth Koirala and Manisha Koirala in the lead roles. Directed by Manish Jha, the music has been composed by Pankaj Awasthi, Mithoon. The lyrics of the song have been penned by Sayeed Qadri, Hasan Kamaal. The film was released on January 12th 2007.

5.) Mann Kunto Maula

Let the beautiful feeling called love take over with this melody from not so acclaimed movie Aaja Nachle sung by the great ghazalkar Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and lyrics written by Jaideep Sahni will surely give you chills.

7.) Aas Paas Hai Khuda

Here is the song “Aas Paas Hai Khuda” from the movie Anjaana-Anjaani. Again a beautiful number for the heartbroken reminding them that the god is always with them. Sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and written by Vishal-Shekhar.

8.) Arziyan

If someone had to pick a list of AR. Rehman’s finest works, Kun Faya Kun(Rockstar) and Arziyan(Delhi 6) would easily be on the top of that list. Written by Prasoon Joshi and shot in the beautiful Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, the song has truly a life of its own.

I am a huge fan of Sufi music and when songs like Arziyan make it to mainstream Bollywood movies, it brings me immense joy. What’s more, this song features the voice of Kailash Kher, one of my favourite singers who has one of the finest voices suited for Sufi and rustic Indian songs.

Piya Basanti is a Hindi album released on 20th November 2000. Sung by classical maestro Ustad Sultan Khan and K.SChitra.Composed by Sandesh Shandilya is a classical ghazal album with beautiful redentions and many more ghazals like ‘Surmayi Aankhen’.

10.)Aaya Tere Dar Par

‘True love always stands the test of time and always triumphs over difficulties” these lines signified by this beautiful qawwali ‘Aaya Tere Dar Par’ from movie Veer Zara. Sung by Ahmed Hussain, Mohd. This debut song of ghazal maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in Bollywood from movie ‘PAAP’ which an adaption of Peter Weir’s film WITNESS by Mahesh Bhatt. With Rahat’s usual classic retention and touch, this song will touch your soul with very beautiful and meaningful lyrics.

This song from Movie ‘Raanjhanaa’ is a masterpiece in itself lyrics written by Irshad Kamil (master writer) music composed by A.R Rehman (master composer) and sung by Javed Ali. This very very very beautiful semi ghazal from Coke Studio Pakistan also featured in the movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Sung by the famed singer from the song Afreen Afreen also from the Coke Studio with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan ‘MOMINA MUSTEHSAN’ and Asim Azhar. Composed by Shuja Hyder and written by Naqash Hyder. This enigmatic piece of classical qawwali sung by Farid Ayaz and Abu Mohammad the two sons of Munshi Raizuddin Qawwal hailing from “Bacchon ka Delhi Gharana”. Their ancestors are known to be pioneers of the Delhi Gharana they moved to Pakistan during partition. This classic Qawwali is a proper milestone of our cultural heritage. on the other hand, the male version of the same song sung by A.R Rehman is also thrilling in his usual high pitched soul-stirring voice.

This qawwali from blockbuster movie ZERO originally composed and performed by The Great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab. The current version is performed by Jyoti Nooran and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, composed by tanishk Bagchi for this movie and the original lyrics written by Khwaja Parvez and the improvements for this movie done by Irshad Kamil.

22.) Maula Tera Noor

A silvery and sung beautifully by Shafqat Amanat Ali from Coke Studio, Pakistan is a spiritual journey of finding the light to guide and protect the soul. This duet love ghazal from Pakistani t.v serial Do Bol is a master gem in the voice of Nabeel Shaukat and Aima Baig is a marvel of modern ghazal with a perfect balance of classic and western music this beautiful and heartbreaking composition is composed by Naveed Naushad.
