Netflix’s Show Indian Matchmaking is a cringe-fest!

Meet Sima Taparia from Mumbai, the star of Netflix’s ‘Indian Matchmaking’ and the matchmaker of your dreams. Sima Mami will judge your entire existence based on your biodata, ask you to compromise if you have genuine human flaws, call you negative if you’re not jolly enough, assess you based on how tall and fair you are, and resort to the stars and her favorite live face-reading app if her efforts are meaningless. As desi as it can getIndian Matchmaking is a total cringe-fest.

Available exclusively in some Indian households and Netflix.

Take a shot:

Take a shot every time Sima aunty says one of her clients should be “flexible” or “adjusting” and you might just run out of all the alcohol in your house (don’t do it, we’re still in lockdown, remember?)

Fair and Tall:

Sima Mami won’t stop talking about how the ideal person should be “fair” and “tall” – I’m still surprised that in 2020 people are so confident saying this stuff on TV. Naturally, caste has also been mentioned. Are you looking for a fair and tall guy, guys?

Boomer Show!

This show Indian Matchmaking is so boomer that when you reject even one rishta because of your own standards, the adults in the house send you to a ‘Life Coach’ because obviously something is wrong with YOU.

Nadia, Relax.

This dream of planning a wedding, still hasn’t come true for Nadia. Spoiler alert!!

Nadia is no longer with Vinay or Shekar, the two men she dates across the series. On the show at least, Vinay stands her up. Twice. But there may be a more complicated version of the story than Netflix cameras capture. In a long, exculpatory Instagram post, Vinay admits to canceling both dates but insists he was upfront about it. After the first missed connection, he says he tried to woo Nadia back with flowers and gifts. But the second date he flaked on because he was sick. “After that day she ghosted me,” he says, adding that he has the receipts to prove it. “I was the one left heartbroken and ghosted.” Her connection with Shekar fizzled, too.

The girl called Nadia gets stood up on a date and you know what she does? Hilarious. Calls up Sima Mami to complain. Wow, wish we could do that every time someone ghosted me. Nadia, relax. Hota hai, Kabhi Kabhi.

Apar-na-aaaa!

You can hate lawyer Aparna all you want. I truly admire her confidence in the series. The woman has 200% clarity and is painfully open about it. totally love that on her. Since Indian Matchmaking‘s release, Aparna and her sound bites—instant memes. Every single one has become a major fixture of coverage.  Aparna is similarly unapologetic about her standards and specific desires. Oh yes, men with senses of humor or podcasts need not apply. And when faced with Sima Mami’s ever-present suggestion to compromise, change, or contort entirely to find a husband, Aparna has a ready response: She’d rather not, thank you.

Pradhyuman ka flex!

Jewelry designer Pradhyuman Maloo had high standards for who he wanted to marry. The audience learns during his appearance on Indian Matchmaking that Pradhyuman has rejected 150 women. But when matchmaker Sima Taparia set him up with Rushali Rai, it seemed like he may have met his match. Also, he has Fancy cocktails, hookah sesh with his sister, a walk-in closet the size of a house in Mumbai. Pradhyuman ka flex toh dekho. Spoiler!!!

Thank god, he isn’t with Rushali!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like things worked out between them, because Pradhyuman isn’t dating Rushali anymore. “We had different paths in life and we respected that and moved ahead,” he told the L.A. Times of their relationship. “I’m still looking for the right one.”

Not, Sharma, it’s Jakhete

Fresh out of college in Boston, Akshay Jakhete returns to India, only to find his family waiting for him to get married. With the help of Indian Matchmaking and Simba Mami, his mom Preeti wants an Indian Matchmaking wedding as soon as possible.

She’s looking for someone who’s “flexible” and Akshay, a self-confessed introvert, thinks that momma knows best! For Preeti Aunty, culture is more important in the match than just being “eye-candy“. She confesses to suffering from high blood pressure due to the task at hand.

Akshay Jakhete rejects multiple girls for having zero compatibility with him. He reveals that he wants his wife to be exactly like his mother. Eventually, he meets his match in a Chartered Accountant, Radhika. Their families conduct a “roka” (pre-engagement ceremony). It’s been a year since these show events and Akshay took to his Instagram a couple of days ago, to announce that the Indian Matchmaking relationship was short-lived. With Akshay going back to being the best suitable boy in town.

Jokes aside

We just want to acknowledge how casteist, classist, sexist, and overall problematic Indian Matchmaking is. Sima Mami was the comic relief that got us through it but she’s not my hero, Ankita is. To know who Ankita is you’ve literally got to watch this reality show.

PS. Kudos to the show for addressing the Guyanese-Indian identity issue.
