Things that are so Indian that everyone will relate to!

Being an Indian is an incredible feeling! We love our cricketers to death. But we also love Sharma ji ka beta a little more than our own son. We love to hate CBSE but also rejoice when our child scores a 100% in board exams. Celebrating weddings with a lot of pomp & show is our birthright. These are just a few things that are so Indian, that everyone will relate to it.

Indians can relate to cricket more than anything
Indians & cricket go hand in hand

But on a serious note, we all love the quirks that comes with being an Indian. They are funny and downright true. We are all guilty of doing these things. No matter where we go, we never leave these peculiar habits behind.

So, I decided to compile a list of things, that are so INDIAN, that everyone can relate to it.

(Psst – even if you live in the US)

1. Indian-izing everything

Let’s face it, we are all together in the hate against China. But do we all not love that kadhai wali chowmein as well? We have Indianized the Chinese noodles so much, that we are left baffled when the authentic Chinese noodles are served to us. Paneer in the chowmein is a must. Also, who eats colorless chowmein? Where’s the soya sauce??!!

2. Dhaniya is complimentary, always

This is probably the most Indian thing everrrr. And more than us, our mothers can relate to it. If you are buying vegetables, the thumb rule is to always get dhaniya for FREE. God forbid if you don’t. Get ready to be yelled at.

3. We want a sookha with pani puri/gol gappe

Guilty & charged. Gol gappe is synonymous to Indians. Even Kangana Ranaut made them in the movie Queen which left the man speechless. Doesn’t matter if we had our gol gappe with meetha, we always want that extra sookha at the end. It is like a cherry on top!

4. Every Indian is a cricket expert

Our craze, love & devotion towards cricket knows no bounds. It is in our DNA. I guess that’s why most of the Indians are born as natural cricket experts. From commenting on who should be batting four down to why did we lose the Champions Trophy to Pakistan in 2017, we know everything.

5. We only become Indians when we step outside the country

Hear me out. We love our diversity yet we classify our own countrymen on the basis of their state & caste. Comments like, “Oh, he can’t speak English, must be a Bihari” or “You are from Karnataka, oh yes, South Indians are all from Karnataka only” are as common as traffic violations.

We only introduce ourselves as Indians when we are in a foreign land. Let’s try & change that bit by bit.

6. We save our clothes for….

Every Indian can probably relate to this. We save our old clothes for either Holi or for making it a hybrid “pochha”.

Holi is the festival of colors, mud slinging and bhaang. And let’s face it, no one wears those clean white clothes except the actors/actresses on daily soaps. We save our old, baggy and stained clothes specially for Holi. They get upgraded to the “pochha” status after we have completely ruined them during the festival.

7. Science, Engineering and Medical are the default settings of career choices for Indians

Nothing beats Indians when it comes to churning out engineers and doctors every year. Why you ask? Because someone once changed the Indian mindset settings to “Science” and that has been the default settings since then. And to add on to this misery, arts is only meant for dumb heads.

8. 2 ki 4 batana/karna/chahana – everyone can relate to this!

This is that one trait which speeds up once the neighbor aunty announces that her Bittu scored 90%. Then regardless of whatever you have scored, you need to remember that you scored 92%. 2% more than Bittu.

Similarly, if Raju was donated a Wagon R in dowry, Ramesh has to compulsorily receieve a Swift Dzire in donation (read : dowry).

9.  Only in Indian families are the ceramic, fancy plates reserved for guests

Yes, you will never get to eat in them. Because steel wali thalli is your forever match.

10. Whenever you asked for a dog as a pet, there was a staple response

I have been through it. So have you. Indians adore their children. So much so that they would prefer you over any dog. Because “ghar me ek kutta kamm hai ki mai dusra bhi le aau?”

Of course these are not the only Indian things that you will relate to. Indians are known for their culture, spices, food and the enormous amount of love that we have to offer!

Let me know in the comments below, what are the other things that are so Indian that everyone can relate to!
